49ers Kyle Shanahan Reportedly Wanted To Sign Tom Brady, Draft Mac Jones But Talked Out Of It

The San Francisco 49ers could have had Tom Brady or Mac Jones on their roster.

During an appearance on the Pat McAfee show, NFL insider Michael Lombardi revealed that team head coach Kyle Shanahan had a genuine interest in signing Tom Brady in 2020 but was talked out of by people within the organization.

“A year earlier, Kyle wanted to sign Tom Brady, and the resistance factor within the building said, ‘No, no, no. We’re not doing that,’” said Lombardi.

After being talked out of signing Brady, Lombardi says Shanahan then thought about drafting Mac Jones. Apparently, Shanahan was discouraged by the team’s front office from taking Jones in the draft after receiving negative feedback from fans on Twitter.

“So Kyle gets back, and he wants Mac Jones, and all of a sudden the Twitter momentum, ‘You can’t take Mac Jones there. He’s not good enough. You can’t hire Al Pacino as Michael Corleone. You can’t do this, you can’t do that.’ He gets worn down.”

Shanahan’s reported interest in Brady and Jones is interesting, considering the mess going on with the 49ers where the team made Jimmy Garoppolo the highest-paid backup in the league when they restructured his contract.

While neither of the Brady/Jones rumors are new, confirmation that they are true will probably make most Niners fans sick to their stomach.
