Broncos HC Sean Payton Explains Reason For Benching Russell Wilson

Broncos head coach Sean Payton is speaking out on why he decided to bench Russell Wilson.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Denver Broncos announced that they had benched Wilson for the remainder of the season.

While speaking to the media, Payton claims he benched Wilson to “get a spark offensively” and that it was not all about money.

“Most of you know, we’ve made a change at quarterback. And I understand all the speculation and everything that surrounds a move like that. And I can tell you, Look, we’re, we’re desperately trying to win. And sure, in our game today, there are economics and all those other things. But the number one, push behind this in, it’s a decision I’m making is to, you know, get a spark offensively.”

NFL insider Jordan Schultz refutes Payton’s explanation and says the team reached out Wilson to tell him he was getting benched if he didn’t rework his contract.

“Russell Wilson’s benching by the Broncos today is solely financially related and has been in the works for weeks, per multiple sources with direct access to the situation.

“The Broncos approached Wilson two days after their October 29 upset win over the Kansas City Chiefs and told him he would be made inactive for the rest of the season if he did not adjust his contract and defer the injury guarantee trigger date that he has for 2025. Wilson has $37 million in injury guarantees for 2025 that will become guaranteed no matter what on the fifth day of the 2024 league year in March.”

Wilson reportedly believes he expects to get cut after the benching which means his team in Denver is coming to an abrupt end.
