Former offensive lineman turns ESPN analyst Jeff Saturday is the new interim head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, even though he has no NFL coaching experience.
The decision to hire Saturday shocked the NFL world.
Jeff Saturday is the first NFL head coach with no college or pro coaching experience since Norm Van Brocklin went from 1960 NFL MVP with the Eagles to coach of the Vikings in 1961.

On Monday night, Irsay explained his decision to hire Saturday.
Jim Irsay says of Jeff Saturday: "I'm glad he hasn't had the NFL experience"."
Because he hasn't coached, Irsay says Saturday doesn't have the fear that coaches often have and they often turn towards analytics for decision making.

Jim Irsay on Jeff Saturday: "You wanna bet against this guy? Put your money down, people … this is for eight games, hopefully more."

Jim Irsay on why fans should believe the promises he's making about Chris Ballard and Jeff Saturday:
"I've never hired a losing coach. It's right there in black and white."

The Colts are getting crushed for hiring Irsay and not even interviewing a minority coach.
Jeff Saturday might be great, but the hire is peak *not reading the room* when it comes to the entire conversation surrounding lack of opportunity for minority coaches.

Texts from some NFL ppl during that #Colts presser included words like “mockery,” “insanity” and “chaos.”
The Jeff Saturday hire upset a lot of coaches + execs (and not just minorities) … But Jim Irsay’s comments seems to have made it even worse

Jeff Saturday just became the head coach of an NFL team, without any prior coaching experience in the NFL or college football.
There are Black coaches in the NFL that have been assistants for years that can’t even get serious interviews to be a head coach.
Amazing.

By all accounts, Jeff Saturday is a very nice, capable person, and I hope he does well in Indianapolis.
This hiring is also a reminder that the arbitrary experience roadblocks put out in front of minority candidates are nonsense.

Jeff Saturday getting this opportunity over very qualified Black assistants is qwhite interesting

The Jeff Saturday hire is a slap in the face to all the black coaches that constantly get hit with the “not ready” “not enough experience” speeches when it comes to head coaching jobs (on every level). I don’t know Jeff so it’s not about him… it’s about the system.

Nothing against Jeff Saturday personally, but this is a major punch in the face to the numerous qualified Black coaches who have been passed over because they "didn't interview well", "lacked head coaching experience" or some other consistently given excuse. https://t.co/eIzML7K4b9
