After months of trade rumors, Jimmy Garoppolo is returning to the 49ers as the team’s backup quarterback and he seems to be perfectly fine with his decision.
After the 49ers couldn’t find a suitable trade for Garoppolo, the team decided to restructure his contract to have him return as the team’s backup in 2022.
Jimmy G was asked whether being a backup is a blow to his ego, and he gave a pretty good answer.
“If that’s gonna take a blow to your ego, you gotta check your ego a little bit,” he said. “You’ve got to know who you are in this league, who you are as a player, who you are as a person, and I think that’s got to carry you a long way.”

Jimmy G is getting paid very well to back up Trey Lance this season.
Garoppolo’s restructured deal is reportedly worth $6.5 million in base salary, which is fully guaranteed and includes $500,000 in roster bonuses, plus play-time bonuses that increase for every game played for a maximum contract value of almost $16 million.
The deal also includes a no-trade clause allowing Jimmy G the flexibility to choose the next team he plays for.
