Trey Lance was apparently not thrilled about the Niners bringing Jimmy Garoppolo back as his backup.
Last week, the Niners shocked the NFL world when they made Garoppolo the highest-paid backup in the league when they restructured his contract.
According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, Lance was a “little annoyed” when he learned about the deal to bring Jimmy G back for one more season.
“While I’d heard [Trey] Lance was a little annoyed in the immediate aftermath [of Jimmy G restructuring], he’s a smart, mature kid who I believe can handle it. Truth is, if he couldn’t, you might have bigger questions about where the #49ers are at the position.” – @AlbertBreer pic.twitter.com/LfXxgTe2rS

As for Jimmy G, he’s said all the right things about being Lance’s backup this year. When asked if it would be a blow to his ego to back up Lance, he said this.
“If that’s gonna take a blow to your ego, you gotta check your ego a little bit,” he said. “You’ve got to know who you are in this league, who you are as a player, who you are as a person, and I think that’s got to carry you a long way.”
Is it a blow to Jimmy Garoppolo's ego that he is now the backup QB?

Breer tried to downplay his report by saying that Lance was just caught a bit off-guard by Jimmy G’s deal and will be fine.
Yeah, full disclosure, my wording might've been a little presumptive there. I'm not climbing in the guy's head. What I heard was it was complicated news to take, as you'd expect it would be, and again that was just in the immediate aftermath.
He'll be fine. https://t.co/oiDMpZYrXI

The Niners desperately tried to trade Jimmy G but didn’t feel they were getting what they wanted in return for him. The team was also not interested in trading Garoppolo to the Seahawks, who have their own issues at QB.
We’ll have to see how the Jimmy G-Trey Lance dynamic plays out this year and what happens if Lance struggles early in the season.
